Etchings and Paintings
Lou Ellis
Lou Ellis works in an unusually complex manner for a
monotype printmaker. Her prints typically have four
superimposed plate impressions, inked in four different colors,
with chine-colle elements, and often with a
fifth or sixth color plate impression on the fly. The plates are
inked in advance and each print is executed
in a single session, to retain registration. Each plate has
intaglio image elements, but are often selectively inked.
The collage elements are often hand-colored and glue-sized. This
complexity leads to a gratifying unity of collage
element with intaglio element, and a blurring of the
distinction.
